Today, as I walked out of work towards my parked car, keys in hand, I was crossing the street (corner of 12th and Cecil B. Moore) and a fairly nice, normal car pulled up to the red light as I was crossing (I had the little green man that said I could walk). And this fairly nice, normal car continues to pull up and pull up and edge onto the cross walk. And the young woman/girl driving, who looked seemingly nice, no hints of ghetto-attitude or prig-ish haughtiness, watches me as I'm crossing, and the nearer I get to her car, the more she edges up on the cross walk.
And then I hear her say (her window was down) to the two passengers in the rear of her car, "Should I hit her?"
My mind: WHAT?!? And I just look at her, wide-eyed, in astonishment, and she then proceeds to continue edging up and then comes within a 1/2 inch of my legs right when I'm in front of her bumper!!! I continued to walk, slightly fearing for my life, and thought: Ah! Crazy woman! What is she thinking!?! Rude! Needless to say, I made it across the street in safety, but as soon as I finished passing her car, she floored it and ran the red light and took off, barely NOT hitting me.
This little incident left me walking away in awe and a little bit of frustration. But that frustration mounted as I drove a couple blocks in mulling over the situation. This is what I *wish* I had said at the moment: (holding up the keys I had ready in my hand) "Oh! I'm sorry! Did you want to run your car into my keys? I can arrange that." Then I would have proceeded to key her sea-foam green car, right on her hood, and walk off.
I just don't understand how a seemingly normal person in a car can want to hit a normal person walking across the street, sans provacation.
Thank goodness my natural instinct is to walk away in awe and not actually react in the way I *wished* after a few moments of bitter contemplation.

Natalie! Hi, it's Becca. Anyway, yes, I have mulled over *TWO* very similar scenarios, except I was super pregnant, like 8 months pregnant while crossing the street. Crazy drivers!
ReplyDeleteA month ago I was walking to my my car with a grocery cart full of bags and both boys. As I got closer to our car, I see a cart headed straight for it, and the woman who had pushed it walking away. Let's just say I did not walk away, maintaining my composure. After running to catch the cart before it hit the car (I slowed it, but couldn't stop it) I hollered a few things at her - including how stupid she is for actually doing it front of someone, let alone the car's owner. LOL Pretty stupid since did have the boys, but I was so irritated (and lacking sleep) and I was ready to rumble! ha..ha.. It amazes me how lazy, careless and inconsiderate people are at times. I have to be careful though, I should be less vocal. LOL. Glad you're OK though ... what an experience.
