Sophie + Stopper = ~ Speaks

Sophie uses her binky the majority of the day. What's that? You don't know what a binky is? It's a pacifier. I don't know why I say binky. I didn't want my kids to use pacifiers but it happened. The crying definitely happens and when Sophie was ~2 weeks old and screaming one night I begged Marc to rush to the grocery store and pick one up. It's been an addiction ever since. But come her 2 year old birthday I am going to force myself to BE STRONG and make her give it up. These days it's more for me than for her - not that I promote it, but when it comes to getting her calmed quickly I just can't help myself. Or I sometimes do, but not consistently or often enough. Yes, yes, all speech therapists and anti-paci parents out there, judge away. I'm okay with it.

That said, despite the constant stopper in her mouth she has managed to learn to speak. A little. Just like Madeleine I'm sure she'll catch up with her peers once the stopper is out so I'm not worried. But here's what she's been saying (from what I can remember):
Hello! (hewwoah!), binky, Madeleine (Mahwen), Daddy, Mommy, GongGong, Paw Paw, Grandma (rrrmama), Grandpa (rrrpa), I don't know, up, out, please, thank you (enk ew), sorry (awwee), no, cup, spoon (ooon), fork, thirsty (irsty), food, noodles (oowulls), more, peek-a-boo, go, where'd __ go? (erred __ go?), doggie, cat, fish, bunny (unny), happy!, ball, jump, rainy, wow!, look, flower, kick, milk, water (although the latter two are quite difficult to distinguish)... and others. Basically, she CAN speak, but she usually has that blasted binky in her mouth. Yeah, she knows lots of words. Eventually she'll be able to say them all. For now, I'm enjoying baby talk.

And she loves the song "Popcorn Popping." It's the top of her list and she'll sing it again and again. Wheels on the Bus is a close second.

Sorry no pics. Wait until I get back from Utah and have recent photos downloaded. For now, just imagine a fine-haired, mop head, pale girl with a BIG mouth and mischievous smile! We love her!!!

  1. Keenan wouldn't take a binkie. I tried, but he was not interested. And, as the youngest of 3 he can talk pretty well. But -- I think most of what he says is basically the same as Sophie. My favorite is when he says the "Where ------- go?"

Yeah - so, don't worry. I'm sure Sophie is doing just fine linguistically speaking.
