You are about to read the unbelievable. Brace yourselves.
I ran. In a race. Ha! I know... it's totally unlike me to do something like this. I didn't think I had it in me. But then again, most people have enough in them to survive a 2 miler. Turns out, I am one of them.
Kensington (the quaintish little town next to us) has an annual 8K, 2-mile, and 1K fun run (kids welcome!) which I suddenly felt inspired to survive. Survive I did. Thrive I did not. I thought I was going to die by the middle. I looked like I was going to die by the end. Granted, I did very little training (aka two walks with the stroller the week prior) and we all know that I'm so out of shape as to be... well, mis-shapen. :D
Other racers were significantly more impressive than myself. Hooray for them! Marc pushed the stroller and the two girls, two friends beat their anticipated times in the 8K (one of them being less than 2 months post-partum = superwoman!), some of the kids made it in the top 10, and others all ran the 2-miler with vigor and vim. I made it, I made it.
But I still loved it and felt so happy about it and was enthused and glad to see and have so many friends there! It was awesome. I would be inspired to do it again. The 2-miler, not the 8K. Next year my goal will be to do it without looking like I'm dying or having to walk 2 blocks in the middle (which, p.s. I feel that I am redeemed from because I had to carry Madeleine 1 block because she was pooped after her out-of-the-blocks sprint and Marc, Sophie, and the stroller had already out-distanced us by 3 or 4 blocks). This is quite the step up from being a cheering spectator at the half-way point (Wellesley!) for the Boston marathon.
So, yeah. My legs work! I loved being in a light-hearted, kid/family-friendly race in a quaint part of town with friends. It was my kind of scene. I'm not aspiring to marathons, half-marathons, iron mans, or even 8Ks, but I do have hope now that I will, before I die, live to enjoy a 5K, which, will totally satisfy me! Fun run!

Sounds like a great race...I'm sad I didn't do it with you guys. I didn't know about it, though :( So keep me in the loop for the next fun run, but I'm trying to work myself up to better running. I can do a 5K, just really slooooow :)
ReplyDeleteI love the pictures, looks like you all had a great time. Congratulations on your accomplishment, it is so empowering to do something you weren't quite sure you could!

ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! What a wonderful accomplishment.
Great job, Nat! Sophie is starting to look so grown-up (I almost said big, but then I realized that 5-month-old Aaron probably outweighs her)! Both the girls are so adorable! You are, too, of course. : )
