Vanity Fair

I haven't showered yet today. It's my traditional approach to "work days" while in Utah. I sit in my parent's home, do research online, see no one, eat junk food. It's very laissez-faire.

Add to that, my mother has been pointing out how old my friends look (sorry, friends!) as she and I browse through blogs and I update her on all my people. Please take no offense. I should correct the statement: older, not old. She says, and sadly, I agree, that my cohort and I are all beginning to look "middle-age." Not necessarily less lovely, less healthy, less fit, or less appealing, just more mature. Sigh. We are, we are. Tell me about it. I'm over thirty!!!! Auck! That just SOUNDS horrible!

But, my vanity remains, if only illusionary. A while back, Marc and I attended a shindig. Other people at this shindig included some couples without children, most of whom I consider to be fairly young, hip, stylish, and amiable. And that evening, even though I didn't make any efforts to dress up or down, thinking I'd be a quick in and out appearance, I looked around at the tasteful couture of these folks and I thought to myself if I had made an effort that night, I could have SMOKED those gals! I really think I could have.

I have taste, not means. I have style, just not motivation. And so... so I don't shower some days. Or I keep wearing tee-shirts and jeans when all the while I can envision myself showing up at the playground, church, joyschool, the mall, a Smithsonian, dinner, or a date looking as much like Audrey Hepburn or Nine D'Urso with hippie, retro, or European styles perfectly befitting my body. And heels. I always think I'll wear heels more than I do. And there you have it. If you met me in my imagination, I'd look effortlessly chic!

  2. You do have GREAT style. And Nine D'Urso... how I wish I could dress like her everyday! I understand, it's hard for me to be motivated - especially when the only things I dress for the school carpool or trips to Costco!

  4. I love your posts! You always make me smile! :) Just so you know, I've always thought of you as right up there with the best of 'em! If you are the 'middle age' club, by all means, I can't wait to get there!

  5. We may be "middle age" but there's not other placed I'd rather be right now. Look at all we've accomplished at this point in our lives. I know many who are going through a little "middle-age crisis" right now, but we are happy with where we are and where we're going. Three cheers for being (a bit over) thirty!

  6. My goodness I love you all!

Well summed up, Purvi. I DO love being my age because I have a full life in front of me and so many good years and memories in my past. Perfect to be in the middle. Hooray!
