Mission Recap: Part II - Food

So, one of my favorite parts of my mission (besides all the really important stuff) was the FOOD! I've never had anything like it.

The Bounty candybars in Reunion - I had no self control. The light and amazing salads in Reunion. The classic Rougail Saucisse, and Poulet Coco. When I think of Reunion, I think of the salads. Oh, and the bouchons (is that right?) the little triangle appetizers we'd get at the marche, filled with cheese, meat, or veggies. Delicious. I also think of great breakfasts as inspired by my Reunionnaise "mini"-companion, Soeur Veronique Law Tchan Wa: fresh pear, cup of hot cocoa, baguette, and a square of dark chocolate. Delightful, right?

When I think of Mauritius, I'm thinking of great Indian food. Probably better than most of the stuff I ate while in India! No kidding! Frere Manand would cook up like 8 different culinary masterpieces and let the missionaries feast. If I had enough money, I'd employ him as my personal chef. Wow! Then there were the parathas from that street side vendor in Quatre Bornes on the main street. So, although there was the great salad and light fare in Mauritius as well... really, it's the Indian food that dominates my memory.

While on my mission I learned to eat fast. And I also learned to eat piment (spicy!). That and being able to eat with my hands. Seriously, why don't we do more of that here in the U.S.? I wish we did, truly.

Below are some pics of the food, members, missionaries. In one we have anchovies and another blood sausage. In another I'm eating peanut butter straight out of the jar - homesick for "American" food (I only like peanut butter and bananas while abroad). Those were not the golden memories, but memories nonetheless.

  2. Samosas- the triangly things were samosas. Bouchons are well... they look like corks. Like potstickers except not sticky and shaped like a cork.

And seriously, you just made me so hungry and so homesick for Les Mascareigns, les missionnaires, les members and most of all for my tan!!
